Without faith it is impossible to please God,faith comes by hearing the word of God...without faith it is impossible to have eternal life.Are the words of God/the bible just idle words or as some think...a history book?There's a huge difference between those who believe the bible is a word from God and those who read it as literature...one group gets reconciled to God,has a hope,a future beyond death...the other continue to keep their distance from God,live in this world of chaos preffering not to think of what happens after they die(or come up with ridiculous ideas of life after death).
God gives us a choice to choose life or death....to make an educated choice,I think we really ought to know what the book of life says about both.

Deutero 32 is the basis for Jonathan Edwards' most famous sermone, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God."

Verse 42, which is rendered by the NASB as: "I will make My arrows drunk with blood, And My sword will devour flesh, With the blood of the slain and the captives, From the long-haired leaders of the enemy" is not something you hear preached on much. But that is a picture of what Christ's blood saves us from: the wrath of God.

In Luke today, I think we see a Christ that is NEVER preached these days. Can you imagine a preacher saying that Christ came "not to bring peace, but division"? But indeed, it is so. And thankfully so. For if Christ didn't not come to save us from the rest of the fallen world, we would bear the brunt of "many stripes" and be the targed for the arrows of His wrath.

A similar picture of God is present in the 78th Psalm.

I'm so thankful that the God who abhors sin so much, also made payment for it.

Deuteronomy 32:28-52

Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; And did all eat the same spiritual meat; And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. (1 Corinthians 10:1-6 KJV)

There is a definite theme running through today’s Old Testament passage, the word’s of Jesus, Psalms and Proverbs, the handling of the Word of God.

But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more. (Luke 12:48 KJV), speaks to the Song of Moses, the sad song of the future falling away of Israel, which continues from yesterday’s reading; the reading in Psalms, that rehearses Israel’s journey in the desert, as well as her behavior in her own land, confirms as a done deal, the future foretold in Moses’ Song, and the Proverb passage sums up what happens when we allow sin to take a leadership position in our lives, we become enslaved. All four readings give warning for us today and hopefully an encouragement for us to OBEY the Word we have heard and read because we are given a birds eye view of the consequences of disobedience.

Luke 12:35-59

In the NIV I had a hard time with the last three verses. They just don't make sense to me as translated by NIV (and most other versions).

Jesus is talking to disciples about watchfulness (a parable), not peace but division (straightforward), interpreting the times (comparison) and then...

Then Jesus says, "Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right?", and as most commentators will say gives a symbolic example of being on the way to civilian court. I just don't get what reconciling oneself with an adversary before going to court has to do with - being prepared for Jesus' coming, the divisive nature of his gospel, or being aware that these (for the Jews at that time) are Messianic times.

I looked at the KJV:

Luke 12:57-59
"Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right? When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison. I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite."

I think when one realizes that "reconciled" is better translated "delivered" and "in the way" does not mean "on the way" We get a much more explicit warning.

Here is my paraphrase:

'You judge what is right. Don't depend on pharisees, neighbors, or your family. You decide. When you are heading with Satan (adversary) before God (ruler), as you are in that way of life (or course of conduct), give diligence to free yourself from him, lest he get you before Jesus (judge) and He condemns you and turns you over to angel (officer) and you are thrown in hell (prison). Where you will not be let out until the "full" debt is paid. That sentence is "eternity" as one can never pay off the burdens of sin on our own merits.'

The idea of "in" (Gk. en) being "within" rather than on comes from here #8. "en" is never used for "on".

That paraphrase of a symbolic civil dispute makes more sense to me given the leadup to these passages. At least that is my opinion.

Of course the only way to "free yourself from the adversary" is to repent your sins, turn to God and accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

John, forgive me, but I think your paraphrase misses two key, but subtle, points.
First, Jesus is not telling them to "judge for themselves" as opposed to asking other people. Rather, by the previous examples Christ has explained that it is, or should be, obvious to them what is coming in the way of judgment. He's making the point that they know when various types of weather are coming from the signs they observe, and since they're aware of the signs in the OT, and are now aware of what Christ is saying, they are without excuse.

Secondly, the little parable of the two on the way to the magistrate illustrates this contrast: in the magistrate example there are three parties, and you (the defendant) may settle with the plaintiff prior to going before the magistrate. However, God is both the plaintiff (really prosecutor) and the judge. So there is no chance to settle without payment in full.

So God must do something as both judge and prosecutor, which as you know, He did through Christ.

Got longwinded... stopping now. ;)

That is certainly the way most commentators refer to this passage.

Maybe I got thrown off by the word "adversary" as that is often used to refer to Satan. In his role as "great accuser" it seemed prosecutorial. Never really thought of God in a prosecutor role. Although as sinners or lovers of the world, we would be in opposition (enemies) to God.

Also got bothered by word "reconcile" or "settled".

The definitions did not have the connotation of reconciliation. More in the way of "get away from". Did not think of God as someone to get away from or "depart from".

Oh well, certainly not the first time I have struggled with passages or little bothersome feelings. Perhaps I was searching for something that is not really there? Appreciate your input.


John, if you look at the writings of the minor prophets, whenever they speak of some day of judgment against Israel/Judah, they'll say that people will try to hide from Lord, and the like.

I understand what you're saying with Satan as an accuser, and accuse he does. But Satan accuses the children of God, while God accuses the children of the world. So when we're accused against, we turn to God. When the children of the world are accused against, they must pay every ounce they owe. So that children of the world, if you will, daily store up God's wrath, more and more each day. It's a frightening thing, really. But it's what we're saved from.
