Genesis 28-29:35

Lots of things caught my eye today in the Old Testament reading but none more than this spoken by God to Jacob.

And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed; And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.
(Genesis 28:13-15 KJV)

God identifies himself to someone who didn’t know Him by means of association. He is the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac, but not yet the God of Jacob. God will prove himself to Jacob because Jacob has no experiential knowledge of who God is. Jacob’s story is my story. I was sent to church and my two caregivers, foster mother and mother, called on a God and mentioned Jesus but their behaviors and actions led me to conclude that God had to be dead or non-existent. I had an encounter with God at the age of 11 then life’s events led me both away from God and to God. While away and in great pain I would latter remember that encounter at thirty-four and conclude that God was indeed alive and had kept me alive all those years, despite cursing those who dared to tell me they believed in Him. In reality God was never away from me, I just had had my eyes closed.

Mike your question for today caused me to chuckle because I had just sent out to some of my friends this e-mail:

Here is another Proverb that caught my eye in the Message bible. How it is worded in the Message bible is a slap in the face and a verbal rebuke to parents who just love their children to much to discipline them. From the Thirteenth chapter,

But first here it is in a few standard English Versions:

24He who spares the rod hates his son,
but he who loves him is careful to discipline him (NIV)

24If you refuse to discipline your children, it proves you don't love them; if you love your children, you will be prompt to discipline them. (NLT)

Now in the Message:
24A refusal to correct is a refusal to love;
love your children by disciplining them.

The Message moves discipline, or lack there of, over to a choice and thus whether to love your children or not is a choice and the proof of your love is discipline, not abuse.

################

Discipline means you love someone enough to put in the effort and time to correct by investing into their future. God is always investing in us by his discipline.

Grace and peace,
Ramona

I truly agree with you Ramona.. children need discipline. Parents need to give it. That's how children learn, grow, become wise.

Comments and QOTD:

per your question about does God discipline? The answer from my perspective is a resounding: Yes! There is godly discipline. When we discipline our mind, train our thoughts to meditate on the word and live in God's vision, purpose, love and read God's word, pray, be the church, that's Godly wisdom. I do believe God corrects us and teaches us-we have to, have discernment though to recognize Godly lessons. Oh yes, God has corrected me and shifted me to the left or right through the years, most definitely.

Praying for those who need Godly discipline this year too! :-)

Gen 28:29:35

So covenants and thy word was your bond. Couldn't be undone back in biblical times. Isaac gave Jacob blessings and sent him off in search of finding a good wife--Godly, from their family in Padan-Aram, his mom's family.

Esau's choice in wives and his marrying yet a 3rd wife from his uncle Ishmael's family(Ishmael's daughter-Mahalath), made me think of Cain and Abel -how Cain chose part of a good thing (fruits and veggies) -from harvest-but he didn't have his heart lined up with God and give of his best! (1st fruit/harvest-grains) it was unacceptable to the Lord and Esau's choices cause many polytheistic views in his household (2 hittite/caananite woman, and an Ishmael(where Iraq, Iran, and muslim culture and religion come from)

Jacob and his dream-ahh, this is always so beautiful-his ladder to heaven. Jacob, a thief, sojourner, sneaky Jacob-God established his covenant with. He (God) takes imperfect people to make perfect the works He established through them.

Jacob hasn't built a strong relationship with his heavenly Father God yet. He has heard of God but doesn't have relationship, in fact he puts stipulations on serving Him- "If" God will be w/ me. "If" God will provide food and clothing, "If" return safely home. "Then" I will serve God.. Even with God, Jacob is trying to negotiate and be a shyster.

Wow, we read about Laban, Jacob, Leah, Zilpah, Rachel, Bilhah, (which later on realize those are all Jacob's wives) and he had an even bigger deceiver than He amongst him. His uncle Laban!, Left this section with Jacob and Leah welcoming 4 sons!

Matt 9:18-38

The healing of Jesus spread far and wide and the woman with blood issue today! God's Son Jesus healed them all! Praise God.

Ps 11:1-7
If we trust in the Lord, why are we running? The wicked loves to hunt and destroy God's children. What they don't know is we have a secret armor God, His judgment will be for such people as these.

Proverbs 3:11-12
The Lord corrects whom He loves

Thank you for your protection Lord and correction. In Jesus Name, Amen!!
